The other day I was walking down the street and rain started to fall. A car splashed me with a nearby puddle not long after, and then I was hit by a falling piano. Sometimes you’ve just gotta grin and bear it. I’m never going to the shops again. Awful Din are a band determined to put this notion in motion, as their new single “petunias.” comes at you with a mindset that says “Hey, sucks about the piano and the broken ribs, but at least you can play Green Sleeves now”. Fuck yeah.
With an intro that throws you into an atmosphere filled with plucked strings, muted guitars and a driving beat, “petunias.” is a song that gets your attention right away. The snappiness of the drums lull you into an easy rhythm as guitars contribute melodies that are larger than life, setting up for the vocals to chime in with such passion that you feel they’re going to tear in half, especially during the chorus. But much like their words and the message of the song, they keep it together. It’s a hard hitting song with a real sense of community and wishes you well. What’s not to love about it?
