Busty and The Bass – Eddie / New Album

Busty and The Bass is a band with an infectious sound. The Canadian outfit picked the best elements from Funk, Soul and Jazz to create music that’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face. I got into these guys through their single ‘Up Top’ which turned me towards their debut album Uncommon Ground, and I haven’t looked back since. They’re my go-to band for when I need a little dose of happiness.

Their new album Eddie is a celebration of 50 years of the above genres. Diving into the archives and producing a record that’s simultaneously timeless and forward-thinking. They’ve even managed to bring some stalwarts on-board – Macy Gray acts as if she’s been part of the band for years on ‘Out of Love’, which kicks off the record with undeniable grooves. George Clinton’s appearance on ‘Baggy Eyed Dopeman’ adds to what’s a real team effort, as the song shines with a jovial quality that really makes me feel part of it with each listen.

It’s a real testament to Busty and The Bass’ ability to make music that’s willing to include others. Starting initially as an instrumental band, they’ve this trait that makes their music sound always on the move, always looking to build and add more layers. ‘Kids’ is a fantastic tune that brings thumping pianos together with a myriad of guitars, synths and horns that really comes into its own as a dramatic slice of Funk.

While Eddie succeeds in bringing big moments to the ears, it also excels in its intricacies too. Amber Navran’s vocals on ‘Clouds’ slip into place without disruption, adding depth to the vocals that work well against the swoon of horns. I love the little spark of keys on ‘Time Don’t Make Me a Stranger’ that wander with the vocals, which lead the listener into its booming close. Without these tiny details, Eddie would not hit as effectively as it does. It is a fantastic record, and one that’s certainly going to be brightening my days for the foreseeable.
