Welcome to another interview with! This week it’s with Duchess, a trio from Gateshead who recently got underway in music with the release of their debut single ‘Rachael’ which I happened to like very much. Very happy to have had a chat with these guys and look forward to hearing more from them soon! Enjoy.

Hey Duchess, how’s it going? It’s going good. We’ve recently released our debut single ‘Rachael’ and had a really positive response. We’re keeping ourselves busy both in public and behind the scenes.

First of all, could you tell us the story of how Duchess was formed and the inspiration behind it’s name? We were all mates when we were young and had all spent a few years prior to forming Duchess hopping around other bands. We just so happened to all be free at the same time, booked a practice and wrote our first song and just kept going. Duchess is Callum on vocals/guitar, Michael on bass and Adam on drums.

Callum’s always been a big history buff, and he was reading about the life of Anne Boleyn and her hopes to get married and become a duchess but she instead became queen, then of course that didn’t work out for her. In the end of her life she wished she’d had settled for being a duchess, for obvious reasons.

You’ve very recently released your debut single ‘Rachael’. What can you tell us about it? Rachael was a part of a collection of songs we’d written once we took some time to reflect after recording our first 2 EP’s. We started writing songs differently both musically and lyrically, and we felt ‘Rachael’ was the perfect encapsulation of our newer material.

How did it feel to get your first single out the way? It was great to finally get it out there. We’ve had a great response from people and had it played on various radio stations including BBC Introducing which was a nice platform to be on. We’re very proud of it but we mainly see it as the first small step to getting where we want to be.

Could we expect to hear more music from you guys this year? We do try to keep quiet as much as we can but if you follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter – all that good stuff – you’re sure to find out.

The North East seems to be having a bit of a renaissance period with all of the great bands it’s producing lately. Has the music scene there always been this fruitful and vibrant? The north east is really finding its feet again in terms of local music and this has been a massive year for that. Small grassroots venues are popping up all over and gaining huge attention, and with the help of high profile festivals like Evolution Emerging, Hit/Meet The North, NARC Fest, etc., it’s really coming into its own. We’re genuinely proud to be a small part of it.

Finally, if you could close out this interview with one final thought, what would it be? We’ll just end by saying cheers for having us! X
