HEKA – ‘Fake Smile’ / Debut Single

Bristol based band HEKA have burst onto the music scene with their fantastic debut track ‘Fake Smile’. There’s not much to say about HEKA, because there’s not much we know – the added mystique of the newly formed five-piece leaves much to the imagination, and this is only fuelled by the groovy tune they’ve recently put out.

Accompanied by an animated video visualised by artist Tom Sharp, the song is an impressive introduction to HEKA’s musical landscape. Over a foundation of slick synth arrangement and surging melody, frontman Anton Larkin delivers a heartfelt vocal performance that elevates the track. There’s no denying that ‘Fake Smile’ is memorable – it’s got catchy guitar riffs and a chorus worth singing along to, which makes for a delicious recipe of synthpop goodness.

‘Fake Smile’ is familiar; it sounds like a song you’ve heard before. It’s clear that the band are inspired stylistically by the likes of The Cure and Depeche Mode, but I think there could be a unique distinction between their influences and their own sound. For now, this remains to be seen, but I’m certainly excited to see what the enigmatic HEKA have in the works. Watch this space!
