Jaunt’s wonderfully failed attempt to create something simple with new single | “On Your Mind”

Everyone feels the urge to change something about their lives. Whether it’s their career, personalities or their wardrobe, we as a species are designed to always yearn for the next step. Canada’s Jaunt have always embraced the shape-shifting life since their inception with 2016’s Chat EP, though for their new single “On Your Mind” they actively tried to do something simple, for a change. However that did not work, and it even sprouted a new word which we’re gonna use in our everyday dialogue:

“*Jaunt-ed

 [jawnt-ed, jahnt-ed]
verb

reworked an idea over and over to the point of insanity while having attempted to reign in your wildest tendencies.”

They tried so hard. But the result is a song that in the quintet’s words “is Timbaland programming circa 2002” & “Arthur Russell lyrical sincerity.”  Spiralling synths produce beats that evaporate alongside looped percussion that pulsate endlessly into the atmosphere. While we can’t hear big Tim’s patented beatboxing BVs, Jaunt does produce something that would make him proud.

Jaunt have proper failed in producing something simple, but the result is a track that’s joyously convoluted. “On Your Mind” brings sunshine to the ears, and bubbling synths that could brighten anyone’s day. Especially Timbaland.
